 Duke Brown Spirit of the Blues Scholarship Application

The Daytona Blues Society will award a monetary scholarship in honor of "Duke Brown" to a local public high school senior that is pursuing studies in music and graduating this year. The “Spirit of the Blues” scholarship fund is maintained by our society in hopes of assisting graduates in their quest of higher learning.

The recipient must be pursuing higher education specializing in music (ex. Music Education, Jazz, Blues, and related studies). The award may be used to cover incidental expenses (ex: books, fees, etc.).

Requirements for scholarship fund applicants:

·                    Completion of application

·                    Completion of an essay on: “The Spirit of the Blues” (500 words or less)

·                    Statement of career/ education objectives

·                    Two letters of recommendation: one letter from a music teacher and one personal character reference letter

·                    Audition (Blues – related material) before the DBS scholarship selection committee (only the top five candidates will audition)

Selection criteria for awarding the scholarship:

·                    completed application

·                    financial need

·                    statement of career and education objectives

·                    essay

·                    audition

All applications and essays must be completed and submitted by April 15, 2006 to the Daytona Blues Society. The top five candidates will be notified and scheduled for an audition before the DBS scholarship selection committee.

Scholarship will be awarded at the recipient’s Senior Awards program.

Applicants may submit their application and essay via mail or through the DBS website.
